Indonesia Election Day VS American History

A Day of Contrasts: Election Day in Indonesia from My Bedroom

As the sun rose on Election Day in Indonesia, my surroundings were a stark contrast to the vibrant scenes unfolding across the nation, signaling the beginning of what promised to be a momentous day for my country and my family. While my family and friends eagerly participated in the democratic process, I found myself sick and confined to my room, surrounded by textbooks and the glow of my laptop screen, delving into the American history.

Stuck in my bedroom, sitting on the floor studying and doing my assignment about The American Confederation and Constitution for my America History class, while my family and friends are having their time of election day for our new president.

Scrolling through social media, I was inundated with images and updates from loved ones reveling in the excitement of the day. This year’s election held particular significance for us, as it marked my dear little sister’s first foray into the electoral process. I knew she was brimming with excitement and anticipation, and I couldn’t help but feel sorry for not being there to share in her joy and support her.

As I delved into my history assignment, researching and analyzing the intricacies of The American Confederation and Constitution, I couldn’t shake the irony of the situation. Here I was, a native of Indonesia, spending Election Day studying the history of another nation. Growing up, history was never a subject I delved deeply into back home. Yet, here I was, grappling with the complexities of American history while feeling somewhat disconnected from my own country’s past.

Despite the physical distance separating me from the electoral fervor sweeping through Indonesia, I couldn’t escape the profound sense of connection to my homeland. Each picture of smiling faces and colorful polling stations served as a poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of democracy that courses through the veins of Indonesian society.

As the day drew to a close and I put the finishing touches on my history assignment, I couldn’t help but reflect on the profound intersection of past and present. While my journey through history may have started with The American Confederation and Constitution, it was ultimately a journey of self-discovery—one that deepened my appreciation for the rich tapestry of cultures and histories that shape our world.

In many ways, my journey through history mirrored my broader experiences as an international student in the United States. Immersed in a new culture and educational system, I found myself navigating unfamiliar terrain, both academically and personally. While my roots were firmly planted in Indonesia, my academic pursuits often led me on unexpected detours, challenging me to expand my worldview and embrace new perspectives.

In the end, while I may have been physically separated from the electoral excitement in Indonesia, my journey through the annals of history provided a different kind of perspective—one that underscored the enduring importance of civic engagement and the timeless pursuit of knowledge. And as I put the finishing touches on my history assignment, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to contribute, albeit in my own small way, to the ongoing narrative of democracy in Indonesia and beyond.
