Our COVID-19 Journey: Battling Adversity, Strengthening Bonds
In July 2021, my family’s life took an unexpected turn when we found ourselves admitted to Sawah Besar Hospital, all four of us diagnosed with COVID-19. It was a shocking revelation that sent shivers down our spines. However, amidst the fear and uncertainty, we discovered the profound impact of friendship, the resilience of family ties, and the unwavering support that carried us through this ordeal.
The Diagnosis
Receiving that positive COVID-19 diagnosis was nothing short of a nightmare. The news struck us like a thunderbolt, shattering our sense of normalcy. We were living in a pandemic, and suddenly, we were part of the statistics. The virus had reached our doorstep.
My mom and I have everything ironed up for my coming path in ballet. Praise the Lord I had been accepted to Virginia National Ballet, Manassas, Virginia, USA as an Apprentice company member, that gives me stipend for every performance and part time teaching assistant that can help me with finances. However, with all these situation happened to us, all of our plan shattered. There was no way I can fly to the US, to attend the Virginia National Ballet.
Friends That Became Lifelines
Amidst the chaos, we found ourselves blessed with incredible friends who stood by our side. These friends went above and beyond, sending us much-needed medicines and even financial support. Their generosity and care were like a lifeline in the darkest of times. Their acts of kindness became a ray of hope amidst the despair.
From Self-Isolation to Hospitalization
Initially, we attempted self-isolation at home, but our aunt, a pediatrician, believed it was imperative for us to receive specialized care. She pulled strings to secure us a place at the hospital where she worked, allowing her to monitor our conditions closely. Praise the Lord, I can see how fast she acted to help us and we did followed her instruction step by step in order to get us facilitated at the hospital. With this current pandemic situation, to be able to be treated in a hospital for Covid is really not an easy thing. We were so fortunate that immediately we can be facilitated, thanks to my auntie.
In the same room, but Not Alone
Once at the hospital, my mom, my little sister, and I were placed in the same room, while my dad occupied a separate gentlemen’s room. Every day, we were inundated with packages from concerned family and friends. These packages contained clothing, essential items, and, most importantly, an abundance of food. The outpouring of love and support was overwhelming.

Facing My Needle Phobia
For me, one of the most challenging aspects of our hospital stay was my fear of needles. I’ve always had a phobia, and now, in a COVID-19 ward, needles were an inescapable reality. The mere sight of a needle would send me into hysterics, and I would cry for an hour after each prick. It was a grueling experience, but it taught me resilience and the ability to confront my fears head-on.
The Long Road to Recovery
Our family’s journey to recovery was far from uniform. My little sister bore the brunt of the virus, experiencing severe symptoms, while my mom battled long COVID. Miraculously, I was the first to be discharged from the hospital, followed by my dad later that same day. Nearly a week passed before my sister was finally discharged.
A Mother’s Struggle
While the rest of us were on the path to recovery, my mom faced an extended stay in the hospital. Her condition took a sudden dip, necessitating a transfer to a larger hospital for an MRI and more intensive care. It was a harrowing time, but it was a decision made out of love and concern for her well-being. After almost a week, she was discharged but was still in a weakened state due to long COVID.
Our family’s battle with COVID-19 was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, challenges, and triumphs. It tested our strength, brought our friends closer, and deepened our family bonds. As we emerged from this ordeal, we were reminded of the importance of love, support, and resilience in the face of adversity.
COVID-19 may have disrupted our lives, but it also revealed the indomitable spirit within us. We will forever cherish the kindness of our friends, the courage of our aunt, and the unwavering love that kept us strong. Though the journey was tough, it made us stronger, and we emerged from it with our spirits unbroken.
