A Journey of Surprises – Winning Gold at the Asia Pacific Arts Festival in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam
In January 2019, I embarked on a journey that would forever change my perspective on challenges, self-doubt, and the power of faith. Little did I know that my first solo trip overseas, to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, for the Asia Pacific Arts Festival, would result in winning the Gold Award for both the Solo Ballet and Group Ballet categories. What made this experience even more remarkable was the internal struggle I faced leading up to the competition.
Overcoming Doubts
I had chosen to perform the challenging Raymonda, Pizzicato variation for the competition, a decision that initially left me questioning my readiness. Doubt and lack of confidence threatened to overpower me, to the point where my mom contemplated canceling my trip. The fear of not being prepared lingered, but little did I know that this journey would unfold into a remarkable tale of triumph.
A Leap of Faith
In moments of uncertainty, my mom and I turned to our faith for support. We sought guidance and strength through prayer, reaching out to our pastor for encouragement. This ritual not only provided me with a sense of calm but also instilled in me the belief that I could overcome my fears and perform to the best of my abilities.

The Solo Journey
Embarking on my first overseas trip alone, without my mom by my side, heightened my nervousness. The idea of navigating a foreign country, participating in a prestigious competition, and performing a challenging routine without a familiar face in the audience was daunting. However, little did I know that this solo journey would become a testament to my resilience and determination.
The Performance
As I stepped onto the stage to present the Raymonda, Pizzicato variation, a surge of nerves threatened to overwhelm me. Yet, in that moment, I tapped into a wellspring of strength that I didn’t know I possessed. The fear melted away, replaced by the sheer joy of expressing myself through dance. To my surprise, the performance was not just good—it was exceptional.
The Triumph
Winning the Gold Award in both the Solo Ballet and Group Ballet categories was an overwhelming surprise. The accolade served as validation that my hard work, dedication, and the leap of faith I took had paid off. The sense of accomplishment was heightened by the initial doubt and fear I had experienced, making the victory even sweeter.
A Grateful Heart
Reflecting on the journey, I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Grateful for the opportunity, for the unwavering support of my mom, for the strength derived from faith, and for the chance to prove to myself that I was more capable than I had initially believed. It became clear that canceling the trip would have meant missing out on an experience that shaped not just my dancing career but also my character.
The Asia Pacific Arts Festival in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, was not just a competition; it was a transformative journey of self-discovery, faith, and triumph over doubts. It taught me that sometimes, taking a leap of faith and believing in oneself can lead to the most unexpected and fulfilling victories. As I look back on that remarkable experience, I carry with me the lessons learned and the confidence gained, knowing that challenges are merely stepping stones to greater achievements.
